Slow Money NYC is a start-up project run entirely by volunteers.
We have a vital role to play – inspiring dialogue and connecting diverse stakeholders in order to catalyze investment in sustainable food.
Over the next year, we will work to evolve from idea to movement to network to organization.
In our Incubation Phase, we seek your support to grow this seed of an idea into a lasting organization. Slow Money NYC has received Fiscal Sponsorship from Slow Money Alliance. We can now gladly accept your donations, apply for grants and solicit members. Away we go!
In the next six months, we will build infrastructure and membership to develop programs that support a movement to democratize investment.
We seek financial support and volunteers during this Incubation Phase.
What we’ve done?
With a few dedicated hands, our volunteer workforce accomplished a lot in 2011. For the whole story, see our Achievements. The following are highlights from the past year:
- Presented Entrepreneur Showcase on May 14, 2011 which featured ten NY area food ventures, 150 attended, and $5,000 raised.
- Catalyzed placement of about $100,000 investments to Entrepreneurs.
- Developed pilot project with Brooklyn Cooperative Credit Union.
- Launched NYC LION (Local Investment Opportunity Network) and its online deal platform
- Farm Dinner with Woody Tasch on November 2, 2011 at Parish Hall, a soon-to-be-opened Farm-to-Table restaurant seeking a final round of funding.
- 345 members on our Meetup site in just one year!
What we’ve learned?
We’ve learned that a great many people in the New York area want new investment channels to shift their money towards local farms and food companies.
We’ve also learned about numerous, diverse & inspiring business owners who work to build a strong, sustainable local foodshed.
What’s the Plan?
Change we want to see must made step by step, brick by brick. As we’ve shared before, we have embarked on three main programs, now under development:
- Slow Money NYC Account, a pilot project with a partner financial institution to Move Your Money into a bank aligned with our ideals.
- Investment Fund financing local, sustainable food business through a third-party financial entity, and
- NYC LION (Local Investment Opportunity Network) reviews and discusses funding of local sustainable food businesses for angel investors.
