Slow Money NYC Names Ten Finalists to Present at First-Ever Entrepreneur Showcase and Resource Exchange on May 14th
New York, NY – Open to all: Tickets now on sale. Slow Money NYC, the New York City chapter of Slow Money, the movement to galvanize investment in local, sustainable food and farming enterprises, announces the ten finalists to present at its inaugural Entrepreneur Showcase and Resource Exchange at The Commons, 388 Atlantic Avenue, Brooklyn, NY, on Saturday, May 14th, 2011 from 1:00 – 6:00 p.m.
Selected from a pool of thirty-eight applicants from NYC and the surrounding area, these ten businesses offer a breadth of solutions for improving regional food production. The SMNYC Advisory Board judged all the applicants based on their commitment to the Slow Money principles, economic viability, and scalability. On May 14th, these ten entrepreneurs will present their business plans before an audience of enlightened investors and customers, as well as the interested public.
“I think system change comes about only when it is economically sustainable, and there are several intriguing propositions from the selected businesses,” said Advisory Board member Jon Zeltsman, Founder of Community Markets.
Borough President Scott Stringer, who has made food system reform one of the central priorities of his administration, will give Opening Remarks introducing the Entrepreneur Showcase. The ten finalists, in alphabetical order, are: AgSquared, Bronx Bees, Brooklyn Bouillon, Brooklyn Grange, Cayuga Pure Organics, Egg Restaurant and Goatfell Farm, Encendia Biochar, Kortright Creek Creamery, NYFoods Organics, and Vokashi.
For Entrepreneurs, the May 14th event will also feature a Resource Exchange with over twenty exhibitors in social impact investing, food activism, community economic development, and entrepreneur services. Confirmed exhibitors include: Acción USA, B Lab, Brooklyn Food Coalition, Center for Agriculture Development and Entrepreneurship; Community Markets, Contact Fund, Launcht, The Moderns; Mission Markets, Equity Trust, Freelancer’s Union, Good Food Jobs, Northeast Organic Farming Association (NOFA-NY), NY Industrial Retention Network, and others.
Budding entrepreneurs or people considering starting their own business could attend our Expert Panel Discussion “Making Your Dream Enterprise into a Real Business: Pre-Plan for Success.” Panelists include Entrepreneur Tera Johnson, founder of Tera’s Whey, a successful sustainable food business; Business Consultant Chris Harmon, Center for Agriculture Development and Entrepreneurship; and Funder Elizabeth Bueno, Acción USA, a leader in urban micro-finance and business development.
For investors, the Entrepreneur Showcase will provide access to sustainable food and farming businesses at different stages of development from start-up to expansion. The businesses are also seeking different levels of financing — from micro-loan to major capital. Slow Money NYC encourages investors of all resource levels to attend including institutional, individual, accredited, and unaccredited investors.
Slow Money NYC also invites everyone who eats to attend the Entrepreneur Showcase. Every food dollar spent supports an agricultural business. This is a compelling opportunity to learn more about local food and farming businesses building regional economic and environmental vitality.
