On June 12th, Slow Money NYC and Entrepreneur Space partnered to host Good Food Spotlight. Entrepreneur Space was an ideal location for this event as their space is an incredibly supportive environment of food business incubation. One of the companies pitching in the evening’s lineup, Grown in Brooklyn/Barry’s Tempeh, utilize the resources offered here.
Entrepreneur Space is a partnership between the Queens Economic Development Corporation and Mi Kitchen es Su Kitchen, providing a home base of offices, kitchen space, and counseling services to emerging businesses.
As with all Spotlight events, each presenting entrepreneur shared a five-minute snapshot of his/her company and directed a specific challenge to the expert panel. The panelists included Kathrine Gregory, founder/director of Mi Kitchen et Su Kitchen; Doron Goldstein, Partner at Katten Muchin Rosenman LLP, and Slow Money NYC board member; and Johanna Kolodny of Food Systems Consulting.
Four companies presented a variety of innovative offerings:
- Barry’s Tempeh, a small-batch, Brooklyn business making tempeh, ‘the way it’s supposed to taste.’
- Charlito’s Cocina, producer of high-quality charcuterie inspired by a desire to celebrate the food preservation tradition of curing.
- Bronx Hot Sauce, producing hot sauce from serrano peppers sourced from Bronx community gardens. Partnering with GrowNYC and Chef Phojanakong
- The Lancaster Food Company, mission-driven bread company employing people out of poverty into good paying jobs.
During their presentations, each business described a current challenge and the panelists weighed in with their expertise. They suggested strategic ways to expand distribution, how to grow a local brand into national recognition, and a variety paths to raising capital.
Several other companies hosted here at The Entrepreneur Space provided catering, including The Regal Vegan, Ella Nemcova, serving up her Faux Gras and Superfood Pesto, and scrumptious desserts from Bonne Fete Baking.
The next Slow Money NYC Good Food Spotlight will be September 18, 2017 at Brooklyn FoodWorks, (Flushing Ave., Brooklyn). Register here now or join our MeetUp group to get updates.
